Alaskan Gold Rush
- Pimlico Gardens
Description
Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute in collaboration with Visit Alaska present…
No other state epitomises the American spirit of adventure quite like Alaska and that’s why the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, in collaboration with Visit Alaska, have enlisted the help of purveyors of extraordinary experiences, Shuttlecock Inc, to take Londoners back to the summer of 1899 and the Alaskan Gold Rush, a time when trailblazing men and women braved the worst that nature could throw at them to follow their dreams north in search of untold riches.
But there’s more to Alaska’s wealth than shiny, golden nuggets alone; with thousands of miles of untouched coastline stretching as far as the eye can see, the state - nicknamed The Last Frontier - boasts an abundance of some of the world’s best seafood. Its waters are home to the likes of the mighty King Crab, Sockeye Salmon, Black Cod and Scallops and that’s what we’ll be serving up this summer as we celebrate the very best of Alaskan produce.
But back to 1899 - June 21st, 1899, to be precise.
Welcome to the prospector settlement of Nome, uprooted from the southern Seward Peninsula coast and dropped into London’s Pimlico Gardens for the day. It’s a ramshackle sort of a place, a scattering of wagons, lean-tos and wooden huts surrounded by timber, rubble and dust. Greying long johns hang from criss-crossing washing lines while the twang of campfire music can be heard from the saloon, the heart and soul of the encampment, where gambling, drinking and carousing continue long into the night. For over eighteens only, of course…
Pre-book your tickets and bring your family along for a day for storytelling, live music, panning for gold, treasure hunting, ferret racing (well they had to keep themselves entertained somehow) and the freshest Alaskan seafood that money can buy, cooked up by Shuttlcock Inc’s team of chefs from award-winning London restaurants Moro, Bocca Di Lupo and St John.
Discover the incredible story of The Last Frontier, as told by the men and women of Nome themselves. Learn how they survived the long, bitter winters and fought off packs of hungry wolves and, when times were really tough, each other in search of their fortune and a quieter life in sunnier climes.
With the kids packed off to bed, eighty diners will then take their seats under cover of canvas to enjoy an evening of food, drink, poker and dancing, all in celebration of the fabled ‘mother lode’, hidden somewhere in the creek nearby (according to legend).
Alaska is just sixteen hours from London, with a quick pit stop half way, so you no longer have to negotiate rough seas or treacherous mountain passes to get there… but if you can’t find a babysitter for a ten day trip of a lifetime and want to find out more about the most wild and romantic of the USA’s fifty stars, just pop down to Pimlico Gardens on the 21st June and see for yourselves what The Last Frontier is all about.
