Coffee has been around for centuries; from African tribes chewing the stuff for energy to millions of us brewing it today, it's safe to say that it's always been an essential part of our daily lives. And if you need one of these beverages (with a punchy taste and creamy, frothy head no less) to cradle in this brilliant, cultured city, then we've got you covered.
It boasts hundreds of cafes from the city centre to Portobello and we've hand-picked some real gems in our guide to the best coffee shops in Dublin. Get ready to dunk cruffins into oat milk flat whites and enjoy a slice of chocolate cake with your americano.
Cosy Dublin Cafes And Coffee Shops
Kaph
Looking for coffee shops in Dublin 2? Discover Kaph: an independent and warm cafe that specialises in all things caffeine. You'll find it perched on one of the trendiest lanes in the capital, Drury Street, and typically with a queue of eager latte drinkers outside.
Here, specialist baristas whip up everything from iced concoctions to flat whites which can be enjoyed alongside a homemade sweet treat. We've got our eyes on the salted peanut butter energy balls and the fruity muffins.
The Fumbally
Tucked away in Portobello, you'll find The Fumbally, a diverse cafe, shop, kitchen, and event space with community at its core. It thrives thanks to its strong relationship with local suppliers who provide sustainable and organic produce. The building itself was born from an old stable building in 2015 and has since been host to various workshops like yoga and even fermentation.
Drinks-wise, the cafe gets its beans from Coffee Collective in Copenhagen in order to achieve a Nordic-style roast, as well as serves guest roasters like Farmhand from Dublin and Bell Lane from Westmeath. So, make yourself comfortable, browse the chalkboard menu and enjoy a pour-over or an iced white alongside homemade sourdough sandwiches.
The Morning Bakery
If you've got a coffee and cruffin craving that needs to be satiated then make your way over to The Morning Bakery. Open seven days a week on Pleasants Street, this minimal spot boasts rotating coffee roasters on retail, speciality brews in the form of long blacks and cappuccinos, and freshly baked goods made in-house daily.
Chomp on custard and rhubarb jelly doughnuts paired with an oat milk flat white and watch the world go by at this wholesome, pooch-friendly spot.
Brew Lab
Speciality coffee in Dublin? Brew Lab's got you. Their ethos is simplicity, offering an espresso bar with four unique coffees on the menu alongside a brew bar. They source 80% of their beans locally and use a dripper to make filter coffee, with world-class brewing methods.
Visit the contemporary spot on Aungier Street from Monday to Sunday to be served by some of its award-winning baristas, tuck into decadent cakes and soak up the welcoming atmosphere. It's not every day you get to visit a cafe that's represented Ireland in the World Coffee Championships.
Scéal Bakery
Baked goods lovers rejoice as you're certainly going to want to put Greystone's Scéal Bakery on your pastry-consuming radar. The elegant and minimal cafe was founded in 2017 by Charlotte Leonard-Kane and Shane Palmer whose adventure began as a market stall in Dublin 9.
The menu focuses on seasonal ingredients and Irish producers, serving indulgent cardamom honey buns, leek, miso and coolea swirls, and sprouted rye sourdough alongside warming macchiatos, cortados and americanos.
It’s A Trap
Another Aungier Street beauty, It's A Trap is a plant-based micro-bakery and coffee shop that encourages you to bring your furry friend along on a crisp day while you try out some of its droolworthy cinnamon buns and decadent Biscoff cakes.
You'll find yourself in both a food and coffee coma here, with oat milk lattes perfect for washing down double chocolate chip cookies. Spot it with its baby pink front door peeking out and enter into a monochrome-furnished den with specialist coffee machines and super-friendly baristas that'll make your day.
Vice Coffee Inc.
Vice Coffee Inc. is not only a champion of Irish Coffee but makes a mean latte too. They've been crafting some of the city's finest bean brews since 2013 and you can find their quality sips located within WIGWAM. On the menu? Think roasters from Ireland and abroad such as Bailies, Calendar and Roundhill.
Swing by this buzzy, central spot to get your chops around cookies or ooey gooey toasties, and wash them down with a creamy latte or Americano.
Proper Order Coffee Co
Perched in the heart of Smithfield is the artsy, minimally designed Proper Order Coffee Co with its white and forest green furnishings, wooden stools and state-of-the-art coffee machines. If you haven't already guessed, it's in the name of this cafe in Dublin city centre - they do proper brews.
Boasting Irish Barista and Brewers Cup Champion awards, it's fair to say it knows how to make a stunning long black as much as they do a flavoured latte (the flavour changes with the seasons). Explore owner Niall Wynn's simple menu, order a cup to go, or sit in and get stuck into cruffins provided by the lovely team at Scéal Bakery.
Two Boys Brew
Head to Phibsborough to find out exactly what happens when Two Boys Brew. While Living in Melbourne, Kevin and Tauren dreamt of opening a cafe and, after moving back to Ireland in 2015, made it a reality. The successful spot has received praise across media outlets and rightly so, as it works with some of the best food producers in Ireland, alongside Root & Branch Coffee Roasters to create tempting, rich cups of joe.
Among dangling foliage and earthy tones, feast on scrumptious brunch dishes like chilli eggs with herb-infused feta, banana bread and flaky sausage rolls, followed by a top-tier pour-over filter with raspberry and tangerine notes.
Brindle Coffee and Wine
You'll feel right at home at Brindle Coffee and Wine, which prides itself on being super pet-friendly (you only have to take one glance at their Instagram to see many a pooch posing next to its logo-adorned tote bags).
Open seven days a week, this cosy hangout offers coffee from Roasted Brown, a single-origin coffee roaster based in Co. Wicklow, alongside Dublin-produced oat milk for signature lattes, and homemade hot chocolates. And if you're feeling peckish? Check out its in-house bakery, slinging out scrumptious sandwiches which you can enjoy while playing board games. Cute.
