The Best Speakeasy Bars In Dublin

Back in the 1920s, the US entered the Prohibition era, where the sale and production of alcohol became illegal, leading to clandestine drinking dens popping up all over the states. These ranged from snazzy bars with swinging jazz tunes to low-lit hideaways where illicit card games ran rife. And though Prohibition is over (and never even made it across the pond, thankfully), there are now hidden hideouts across Dublin reminiscent of this glamorous bygone era.

From hidden dens perched on the corner of St Stephen's Green to award-winning spots in the heart of the city, whipping up whiskey-laced concoctions and oozing 1920s vibes, we've curated a guide to help you find a cool speakeasy bar in Dublin for your next tipple-fuelled venture.

The Blind Pig Dublin

Tucked away on Suffolk Street, The Blind Pig is Ireland's longest-running speakeasy that originally started as a pop-up in 2011 by the international award-winning bartender Paul Lambert. Hidden behind a false storefront, you'll find it leaning into the 1920s Prohibition era; its interiors are moody, with an intimately lit bar, dark wooden furnishings and exposed brick walls.

There's a mix of live music (think jazz and blues) here from Wednesday through to Sunday, and a stellar drinks menu featuring exquisite sips like the smoky U.P, made using mezcal, Witches digestif, bergamot and sour OJ, and the Dirty Martinez which includes Arbequina Olive P.X Old Tom Irish gin.

9 Below

For a hidden speakeasy bar in Dublin, head to the centre where you'll discover 9 Below - a subterranean drinking destination that's perfect for date night. The den has taken over the basement of what used to be the former St Stephen's Green Hibernian Club and features four intimate spaces that have all been beautifully designed.

Plush, velvet sofas line the rooms, paired with tables topped with golden lamps - classy and elegant, they welcome you in to get your lips around the bar's signature sips. Our favourites include Cast Away, made using Boatyard sloe gin, Italicus (bergamot liquor), cardamon and banana cordial, camomile, tea and black walnut bitters, and the coconut Don Julio-flavoured, tequila-based Flight Club.

Peruke & Periwig

The best speakeasy bar Dublin has to offer has to be Peruke & Periwig at No.31 Dawson Street. Open seven days a week, this cool den is a great spot to drink award-winning, creative concoctions with friends or on a date.

Its decor is regal - think candle-lit tables, plush cushions and velvet drapes in an intimate dining space with vintage paintings framed and hung on the walls. The menu features Irish bar snacks which you can pair with exciting tipples, like the whiskey-based Joshua's Punch (a nod to the founder of Dawson Street), The Olok, featuring banana, condensed milk and avocado, and the citrusy The Penacho.

Vintage Cocktail Club

Dublin's Vintage Cocktail Club oozes a retro charm; decorated with trinkets, candles and pinstriped walls, it's quite the looker. Perched in the heart of Temple Bar, you'll uncover the den behind a black door marked with the letters VCC. Ring the bell, then enter and dive into its bespoke menu.

Hunker down on one of the three 1920s-themed floors, and enjoy the likes of The Bronz 1905, featuring Beefeater gin, and a signature dry and sweet vermouth blend, or a Wee Dream with whiskey and apple liqueur.
