Who doesn’t love a bit of pie to warm the cockles on a cold day in Edinburgh? Whether you’re on the hunt for a classic steak pie and mash, a hearty fish pie or perhaps a warm serving of apple pie, here are our five best spots for pie in Edinburgh for a slice of the good stuff.
Edinburgh's Best Pies
The Scran and Scallie
- Scottish
- 1 Comely Bank Road, Edinburgh, United Kingdom, EH4 1DR
If you want a seriously good pie, look no further than this
award-winning gastropub in Stockbridge. The Scran & Scallie has
been awarded a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand and was founded by
leading chefs, Tom Kitchin and Dominic Jack of the Michelin starred
Kitchin Group. As expected, the ‘scran’ here is pretty spectacular
– the food menu showcases some of the best local and seasonal
Scottish produce, and there is an artfully curated drinks list
featuring some great ales, artisan beers, seasonal cocktails, and a
fantastic wine list.
Pie fanatics should try the hearty steak pie for a generous
portion of succulent steak meat and rich gravy encased in a
beautifully cooked pastry crust. The fish pie is equally tasty,
loaded with a delicate mix of fresh fish, a light and creamy fennel
sauce, and a delicious potato topping. The atmosphere is always
vibrant and welcoming at this family-friendly and dog-friendly
restaurant, and guests love the comforting, rustic interiors. Make
sure you book in advance as this spot is extremely
popular!
Piemaker
- Pies, Vegetarian / Vegan Friendly
- 38 South Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1LL, UK
The Piemaker is dedicated to pies – it’s in the name after
all! This no-frills pit-stop in the heart of Old Town is perfect if
you’re looking for a wide selection of savoury and sweet pies at
great value. In true Scottish fashion, you’ll find a scrumptious
haggis pie which is extremely popular, as well as a steak scotch
pie, a chicken and mushroom pie, a cottage pie and an extensive
list of meaty bakes and rolls.
There are some fantastic vegetarian options too, including
vegetarian haggis pie and macaroni and cheese pie. For vegans,
there’s also a section of the menu dedicated to some tasty
plant-based bakes too, including a delicious Moroccan spice bean
bake. And for those with a sweet tooth, The Piemaker also does
some fabulous apple and raspberry pies and warm apple turnovers,
which really do hit the spot when you’re craving something
fruity!

Auld Hundred
- Pub
- 100 Rose St, Edinburgh EH2 2NN, UK
Tucked away on Rose Street is Auld Hundred, a well-loved,
historical Edinburgh pub and one of the oldest in the area. This is
a great, family-friendly spot serving traditional pub food and real
ale – and most importantly – a famous steak pie which really is
worth all the hype. The pie meat is incredibly tender, and the puff
pastry is golden and cooked to absolute perfection.
The pie is served with a selection of vegetables and your
choice of chips or boiled potatoes – perfect for soaking up some of
that heavenly gravy! Auld Hundred has a ‘hidden dining room’
located at the top of a spiral staircase, which is a lovely,
intimate setting for relaxed lunches or cosy dinners with family
and friends. Located just a stone’s throw away from Princes Street,
this pub is the perfect place to unwind after some shopping or
sightseeing.

MUMS Great Comfort Food
- British, Diner
- 4A Forrest Rd, Edinburgh EH1 2QN, UK
This retro-style diner does exactly what it says on the tin –
serves up some wonderful, hearty meals which will take you straight
back to your childhood. With a whole section of the menu dedicated
to pies, pie lovers won’t be short of choice here! Including
chicken and ham pie, steak and ale pie, shepherd’s pie, and fish
pie – there really is something for everyone on the menu.
For vegan diners, there is even a pumpkin and sage pie served
in a creamy tomato sauce with a puff pastry topping and hand cut
chips, and there is also the option for pies to be made gluten or
dairy-free. Situated a short walk from The
University of Edinburgh, this is an ideal spot for students to have
a taste of home cooking whilst away from home, at really affordable
prices!

City Restaurant
- Scottish
- 35 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian, United Kingdom, EH8 9BE
Heading out for a show at the Festival Theatre? Stop into this
family-run classic diner for a steak pie. Originally helmed by
Giuseppe and Margherita and occupying a single-storey, the City
Restaurant now has an upstairs and is run by the next generation,
Marco and Joanna. The red frontage has gone, replaced by a sleek
grey front elevation, which is complemented by an end gable adorned
with a large street art mural. Take a seat and watch the Old Town
pass by as you tuck into a traditional bake filled with seasoned
beef steak and surrounded by puff pastry, served with homemade
chips, garden peas and gravy.

Bertie’s
- British, Fish and Chips, Vegan / Vegetarian Friendly
- 9 Victoria Street, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom, EH1 2HE
While traditionally pub grub, the pie now makes it to some
fancier establishments’ menus. Bertie’s, brought to us by the local
and uber-successful Vittoria Group, is the place for plaice… or at
least “proper” fish and chips, served with style. But the menu
offers something for every preference, including the carnivore. Its
steak pie features tender pieces of braised steak that’s
slow-cooked in gravy and encased in light pastry, then served with
garden peas and twice-cooked chips or mash. Best of all, this steak
pie is one of the options on the great value set menu (as well as
the a la carte), where you can enjoy three courses for £30 per
person. And if you’re in possession of a Hearts or Hibs season
ticket, or an NHS employee card, you’ll get an additional
discount.
