Edinburgh’s best sandwich spots

Oink

  • Sandwiches
  • 34 Victoria St, Edinburgh EH1 2JW, UK
This one’s for the real meat-eaters amongst us. Oink (as the name would suggest) base their menu around the eye-catching, mouth-watering hog roast. As working farmers, the guys at Oink had the simple idea of bringing quality, natural products from the farm to the city. Passionate about good “honest” food, they wanted to introduce a very different food concept to Edinburgh, with their fresh and delicious Scottish Hog Roast Rolls.

All of the meat is very high quality and never fails to please in terms of taste. The formula is simple: choose from white or brown bread, choose a stuffing (sage and onion or their own handmade haggis), add a sauce (apple, mustard mayo, BBQ, or chilli cheese) and – of course – add your pulled pork. Prices are reasonable and serving sizes are generous. If you’re in the mood to indulge, look no further.

Pomelo

  • Sandwiches
  • 27 Sciennes Road, EH9 1NX

Sciennes Road venue Pomelo is a pan-Asian restaurant that has been around since 2021. They aim to bring the flavours of Asia to Scotland, while using local produce in their cooking wherever possible. Head Chef and owner Jun Au has grown the business from a tiny kitchen to their current restaurant, and sandwiches are firmly on the menu.

Their fried chicken sandwich is a must-try, featuring crispy gochujang covered chicken topped with slaw, served in a pineapple bun. Pair this with garlic and chilli chips for the ultimate meal.

Offering some of the most unique sandwiches in the city, Mirin is an independently owned Asian restaurant in Leith. Expect simple, laid-back interiors and a lively atmosphere, as well as a list of low intervention wines. They specialise in small plates, but you'll also find hearty sandos on their menu.

Whether you prefer a kimchi crust burger filled with a double smashed beef patty and cheese, or a macaroni cheese katsu sando, there's plenty to dig your teeth into here. These start from £12 each, and you can follow them with an indulgent pineapple cheesecake for dessert.

Alby’s

  • Sandwiches
  • 8 Portland Place, EH6 6LA, UK
Boasting some of Edinburgh’s finest ‘Big Hot Sandwiches’, Alby’s is well-known in the Leith area for serving up some seriously delicious grub. The produce is always seasonal and expertly cooked. From sumptuous meaty options, like their Fried Chicken Club (panko-fried chicken thigh, bacon mayo, smoked tomato, pickle salsa, chicken salt croutons and shredded cos) and yummy meat-free options (our favourite is the aubergine and som tam), there’s truly something to suit all tastes.

King Of Feasts

The kitchen at Polwarth Tavern has been taken over by Rob Casson, also known as the King Of Feasts. He serves up viral sandwiches that are as much a treat for the eyes as they are for the tastebuds, and there's a monthly changing menu to choose from.

Fillings range from fried chicken with dill pickle cream cheese to all-day breakfasts, and you can enjoy them between Wednesday and Sunday each week.

Relish

Distinctively no-nonsense, Relish is a bit of a hidden gem in Edinburgh’s trendy Leith. With an extensive menu and extremely low prices, we can see why locals flock to this small café each lunchtime. Choose from a range of different bready bases – rolls, baguette, wraps or sliced artisan bread – and add your choice of filling; from fresh salami or chicken pesto to goats cheese and Taleggio, the options are endless. The coffee here is top-notch too, and if you’re really peckish, why not add-on a side of their delicious and seasonal homemade soup?
