A beautiful, Victorian-style bar in the heart of Merchant City, The Libertine is becoming a firm favourite with local drinkers. Formerly known as Merchant's House, The Libertine opened its door in late 2011 - its name was chosen through a competition, after the loose-moralled Victorian poet, John Wilmot, the 2nd Earl of Rochester. With windows that stretch from floor to ceiling, this bright, open bar still holds a cosy, antique feel with opulent wallpaper, aged leather seating, dark wooden features, stylish flooring and plush red features.
Week days are bustling as diners pop in for beer and burger specials, while nightly events attract loyal regulars for quizzes, movie nights, open mic sessions and live music. DJs come in at weekends as the clientele let their hair down and shake off the shackles of the week. A strong emphasis on the gastro side of things makes for popular menu filled with pub grub classics, fish and chips, pies, sandwiches and the aforementioned, burgers. Meanwhile the bar stocks all the usuals along with some guest beers and ales, niche whiskeys and house cocktails. With live sport screening as another big selling point of this boozer, expect a varied crowd of foodies, sports fans and after-workers looking for a nice bar with bag loads of charm.
