This year's Radio 1’s Big Weekend is coming to Glasgow. The festival, which in the past has seen the likes of Rihanna, MGMT, Jay Z, Justin Bieber and Swedish House Mafia come to towns and cities around the UK, is the biggest free ticket festival in the UK. Kicking off in Glasgow Green over the weekend of the 23rd-25th of May, the event is set to kick off Glasgow's big summer in style.
The first acts to be announced so far are Scot songsmith, Paolo Nutini, who is returning to the fold with his new album and Brit hitmaker, Rita Ora, who has played the festival for the last two years. Friday night at the festival will be dedicated to all things dance, showcasing the wares of some of Radio 1's late night offerings.
And eclectic youth music station, we can expect a wide selection of British and international, big name and up-and-coming acts to take to the stage. Performers are as diverse as Tinie Tempah, David Guetta, Paramore, Biffy Clyro, Florence and The Machine, Bastille, Ed Sheeran and The Saturdays all past-performers.
The last few years have seen the festival head to Derry, which was the City of Culture 2013, and Hackney in 2012, which was home to London's Olympic Park. So it's fitting that the show comes to Glasgow in the same year as the Commonwealth Games and the 20th MTV EMAs, which hit the city in November. 60,000 free tickers are up for grabs and will be available from March.
