The 10 Best Greek Restaurants In Liverpool

The holy trinity: olive oil, wine and grains - oh, and gyros, of course. Greek food has a rich history that can be traced back over 4,000 years; you'll even find that the first ever cookbook was written by an ancient Greek poet.

In Liverpool, this Mediterranean cuisine is everywhere; our city’s longest-running restaurant is even Greek, having famously brought hummus to Leece Street in 1974. Nowadays, you'll find scrumptious souvlaki on Lark Lane, tempting tzatziki in the centre and so much more, which is why we've compiled a guide to the best Greek restaurants Liverpool has to offer.

The Best Liverpool Greek Restaurants

Greek Taverna

This Bold Street beauty is a restaurant that's set in its traditional ways of providing an authentic experience to diners. Greek Taverna can be found boasting relaxed interiors (think rich, blue leather seats paired with dark wooden furnishings) and a menu packed with Greek tapas and delectable desserts.

Visit with family or friends and tuck into three plates for £16.95, served every day from 12pm 'til 4pm, or browse the a la carte for flavoursome kebabs, skordo stombi and chicken feta salad. Our favourites include the keftedes (spiced meatballs cooked in a plum tomato sauce) and the tahini, which is great for mopping up with garlic bread.

The Real Greek

The Real Greek began with the intent of bringing the delicious and healthy diet of the Eastern Mediterranean to the UK, and since founder Theodore Kyriakou opened his first restaurant in London in 1999 to critical acclaim, it's expanded with outposts across the country.

You'll find the Liverpool spot fronting floor-to-ceiling windows, warm lighting and lush greenery on Paradise Street, alongside crowd-pleasing dishes like halloumi popcorn, taramasalata, chicken Monastiraki and souvlaki wraps filled with lamb meatballs and minted yoghurt. And if you've room for dessert? The filo custard pie, a traditional Sérres sweet treat, is a must.

Christakis And Opa Opa

Located on Duke Street, Opa Opa is a well-known party venue and Greek eatery among Liverperpudlians. Head down on a Friday or Saturday and you'll find this cool spot flooded with belly dancers and DJs spinning tunes, and plate smashing 'til midnight. Delight in fresh plates like its signature chicken ouzo, served with rice or chips, garlic pita bread and pork souvlaki.

Over on Aigburth Road in Cressington, its foliage-adorned sister venue Christakis offers special party menus for £30 per person (think tzatziki, halloumi, keftedes and more, all followed by baklava). The regular spread involves a mixed grill (£17.50), and meat and fish platters (from £16.50 per person), perfect for sharing come date night.

Eureka! Greek Restaurant

Eureka! Greek Restaurant in Liverpool is warm and welcoming, with friendly staff and authentic eats  - it even whips up its own homemade salad dressing for you to take home with you and recreate its much-loved dishes.

Founded in the 1980s by Trikala-born chef George Lkovakis, it's a haven for mezze enthusiasts and a beautiful spot complete with flowers and exposed brick walls. Swing by to dig into afelia (pork braised in red wine), silky, creamy moussaka and chicken skordo, followed by ekmek kataifi, a wheat-style pastry with custard and whipped cream.

Souvla

If you've got a hankering for souvlaki then make your way over to Souvla on Allerton Road or Hardman Street. While specialising as a Greek grillhouse, this modern, minimalist place does it all (we see you Swedish meatballs).

Soak up natural interiors, white panelled and thatched walls surrounded by dangling foliage and wolf down some seriously good-looking gyros and pitta wraps. Choose from chicken, pork or sausage to fill the soft bread with. And if you're vegetarian? There's halloumi, cheese or zucchini croquettes to drool over.

Othellos

In 2004, owners Gerr and Maria took over Othellos and the rest is history. The Gateacre Park Drive restaurant was refurbished with classic Greek interiors while maintaining a modern, airy feel, and has been serving scrumptious food to the people of Liverpool ever since.

On the menu, you'll find signature plates like saganaki (flambé cheese with brandy), and pickled octopus, alongside tempting vegetarian options such as yemista (stuffed peppers and tomatoes) and a juicy halloumi kebab. If you're keen to go all out, opt for a chef's special - the pork selino has our vote.

Zorbas

One of the oldest-running restaurants in the city, Zorbas, is a family affair that's been acknowledged for its contribution to advancing Greek culture in the city. It opened in 1974 with chef Haralambos Michael at the helm, wanting to bring a slice of Cyrpus to Liverpool.

He later teamed up with Louisa Michael, whose time in a rural Cypriot village and culinary knowledge combined helped take the Leece Street restaurant to new heights. You'll find live Greek bouzouki taking place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and scrumptious dishes five days a week. Expect flavoursome dolmades, oven-baked feta, falafel and more.

Laros

Proper Greek street food? Yes please. With two locations across the city, in the centre and Mossley Hill, it's safe to say that Laros is all over it. Serving up sensational souvlaki is what it does best - the dish widely known as the world's first street food is made with the freshest ingredients, so that lightly charred meat encased in a warm pitta falls apart in your mouth.

It also prides itself on its fragrant falafels, fit for vegetarians and vegans, and the famous loukoumades, meaning 'mouthful' or 'bite' in Greek, for dessert (think fried doughnuts drizzled in honey).

Retsina

Family-run for over 20 years, Retsina is a traditional Greek restaurant in Liverpool that's ticking all our boxes. Mel and his wife Biba source local ingredients and import special ones from Greece to create delicious plates which, paired with a warm and friendly ambience, make for a top-tier dining destination that's worth returning to.

From Thursday to Sunday, you'll be able to chomp on an authentic banquet, served the Greek way, from £24.90 per person. Main courses include pastichio (pasta with minced meat), pork kebabs, koftas and moussaka that can be enjoyed alongside an £8 cocktail, like the vodka-based Tropical Sunshine.

MeatMe

When casual and affordable is the memo, MeatMe delivers. The street food spot on Lark Lane is all about satisfying the hunger pangs with gyros, souvlaki wraps and loaded fries. Since opening the modern restaurant in 2022, director and head chef Dimi Giamaris has been sourcing the freshest ingredients and preparing everything in-house daily.

Order to go and chomp on your dirty halloumi-covered chips in a nearby park, or sit in and devour chargrilled chicken smothered in homemade mayonnaise. There's even the chance to gobble up a spicy cheese dip, served with pita bread.
