Top Michelin Star Restaurants In Liverpool

Liverpool's food history is so rich that even the name scousers comes from a type of stew invented there. So it's no surprise that the restaurant scene here is pretty special too, with a diverse range of cuisines showcased along its streets.

There are countless venues recommended in the Michelin Guide in the city centre, though for those picks that have been awarded the coveted star, you'll have to travel slightly further afield to Aughton - a small village just north of the city that's become the Michelin capital of Britain despite a population of just 8,000. So whether you're looking for fine dining in the heart of the action, or star-worthy spots in a more remote area, we've rounded up the very best Michelin Guide and Michelin star restaurants near Liverpool here.

Top Liverpool Michelin Star Restaurants

NORD

Perhaps the closest you'll get to Michelin star restaurants in Liverpool city centre, NORD is featured in the Michelin Guide thanks to its varied and flavourful menu. You'll find this place close to the Royal Albert Dock, fronting pretty tiled floors and a green colour scheme, with plenty of plants dotted around the room. The food is largely inspired by Chef Daniel Heffy’s time in Scandinavia, working at a three Michelin star restaurant for part of this period.

They also use locally sourced ingredients such as seafood from Wards Fish in Birkenhead and fresh meat from Caterite in Cockermouth - with a focus on sustainability above all else. Their five-course set menu comes in at £65 per head, showcasing the best of their dishes, or opt for the a la carte option to enjoy everything from rhubarb cured seabass to lobster tail and pork belly skewers or asparagus pasta with walnut cream.

Their tasting menu costs £115 each for seven delicious courses, prepared using local produce where possible. Dishes change on a regular basis, but sample plates include English asparagus with cockle popcorn, beef carpaccio topped by Exmoor caviar and rabbit loin with smoked carrots - all beautifully presented.

The Art School

The Art School is found in the Georgian Quarter, inside a Victorian building that was once a 'Home for Destitute Children'. They reflect the history of the venue with vintage antiques and furnishings, contrasting with bright red chairs, dark walls and modern hanging lights.

Chef Patron and owner Paul Askew is focused on bringing high-end gastronomy to Liverpool, with a 'field to fork' philosophy that champions sustainability. Having lived everywhere from Sunderland to Dubai, there's an international twist to Askew's menu as well. You can choose between a series of multi-course set menus starting from £49.50 per person, with dishes ranging from charred slow-cooked fennel to haunch of roe deer venison with seasonal baby vegetables - and there are vegetarian and pescetarian options too.

8 By Andrew Sheridan

Originally located in Birmingham, chef-owner Andrew Sheridan moved 8 By Andrew Sheridan to the heart of Liverpool in spring 2023, winning the British Restaurant Award for Restaurant of the Year shortly after. The celebrated spot has also been awarded two AA rosettes and earned its place in the Michelin Guide, housed in a Victorian building with a dimly lit lounge bar and an intimate dining area.

The restaurant gets its name from the two eight-seater counters available to eat at, where you can tuck into an eight-course tasting menu for £110 per person, with the option to add on a wine pairing for an extra £85. Think stone bass in tikka sauce, truffled beef, Cornish saffron buns and much more, with dishes changing on a frequent basis.

Belzan is brought to you by Chris Edwards and Owain Williams, the team behind Filter and Fox, in collaboration with chef Sam Grainger. This Smithdown Road location exudes neighbourhood restaurant vibes, with a small but dedicated team serving a menu that flows with the seasons, switching up regularly.

Settle down in their relaxed, rustic white-brick dining space to enjoy lunch, dinner or a set menu for just £24 per head (or £32 for three courses). Get stuck into creative plates like barbecued courgette drizzled in sheep's yoghurt and honey or steam steel head trout with mussels - and they offer a number of vegan options too.

Moor Hall

After the very best Michelin star Liverpool restaurants? Then it has to be Moor Hall, which has been awarded two stars, five AA Rosettes and a Michelin green star for sustainability. The decorated venue also came third in the Top 100 list during the National Restaurant Awards 2024, so it's clear that chef Mark Birchall knows what he's doing.

They've got both a dedicated cheese room and a wine cellar here, while the main restaurant is a huge venue found on five acres of gorgeous gardens - first built in 1282, though the building as we know it today has been around since 1533. As for the menu? Expect top-notch sustainable British produce with perfectly paired flavours, from East Coast lobster with Tarleton tomatoes to honey-roasted duck and Cornish turbot with shrimp.

With two Michelin stars and countless other awards, it doesn't get moor high-end than this.

The Barn

If you're looking for Michelin star restaurants in Merseyside, Aughton-based venue The Barn is an excellent choice - also run by Mark Birchall and having earned one star in 2022 for high-quality cooking. Unsurprisingly, you'll find this place in a rustic, restored barn, on the same five-acre grounds as their more formal sister restaurant Moor Hall.

Think exposed brick walls, wooden beams and shelves stacked with fine wines, using the same home-grown produce as Moor Hall to create an elegant British menu. We're talking duck liver parfait, cured Cornish mackerel with fennel, butter-poached turbot and so much more, with a choice between the a la carte offering or a set three-course dinner for £48 per person.

He uses ingredients that are both locally sourced and imported from France, with a real focus on textures as well as taste.

Whether you're in the mood for a three-course lunch menu, six tasting courses or a Sunday dinner, you'll find it all here - with prices starting at just £48.50 per person. Sample dishes include native lobster with Iberico lardo, Isle of Skye scallops and maple toffe pork, with optional wine pairings from as little as £22.

OXA

A little way outside the city centre, OXA is situated in Birkenhead. This venue is also owned by Andrew Sheridan, taking his cooking further afield to a casual, neighbourhood spot with relaxed leather booths and wooden tables to dine on.

The laid-back atmosphere doesn't make the food any less fantastic through, as the Michelin Guide commends their occasional Asian twists on classic British fare. They offer six or eight-course tasting menus for £70 or £80 respectively, featuring hake with mussels and cauliflower, salt-aged pork, Yorkshire rhubarb and much more.
