Ninety One is proud to welcome Dublin-natives Bricknasty for their Living Room debut! Fresh off the back of a busy year, 2022 saw the band's first single Ina Crueler from their upcoming EP gain critical acclaim, showing their maturity as songwriters and firmly pitching their flag as one to watch in the Irish and UK jazz scene. With performances supporting Maverick Sabre and Hiatus Kaiyote, along with a string of festival appearances, Bricknasty is going from strength to strength. Join Fatboy and the gang for their headline London show, guaranteed to be a belter.
ABOUT BRICKNASTY
Spearheaded by Ballymun native, frontman and guitarist Fatboy, Bricknasty is the product of a group raised by the internet and grounded in community spirit. The result of Fatboy and producer Cillian McCauley’s chance encounter on Soundcloud, the pair’s online relationship later expanded to a fully fledged physical band with the introduction of Dara Abdurahman bass, Korey Thomas drums and Louis Younge sax/keys. Sitting somewhere in the venn diagram intersection between Untitled Unmastered era Kendrick Lamar, D’Angelo and the iconic punk-folk poetry of Dublin’s Damien Dempsey, their unorthodox sound and uncompromising storytelling is the product of dedicated musicianship as much as it is the chronically online resourcefulness of the DIY generation.
It’s an approach that evades easy categorisation and features everything from the off-kilter blends of 2000s RnB, to slurred rap delivery, sticky falsettos and anything else that takes their fancy. It makes sense given that until the group’s unconventional producer Cillian met Fatboy, he was recording sounds from his laptop onto his android phone. It’s not hard to see how his eccentric methods brought an unpredictable element to the rest of the player’s tight music college education. This versatility comes into full focus on their debut project Ina Crueler in the blues of the title track and the grooves of ‘GUILT,’ whilst intentional songwriting remains the musical throughline.
