Corney and Barrow is a quaint Dockland waterfront bar that beams brilliance in the heart of Canary Wharf. Boasting a lengthy wine menu to impress connoisseures alongside some delicious eats, we swung by to check out this relaxed plot first-hand.
The Venue:
Corney and Barrow definitely pulled the trump card when setting up their location along the West India Quay riverside. This picturesque location makes their seated terrace the ideal space to soak up some summer sunshine but seeing as I made my visit in the depths of mid-winter, my companion and I didn’t get the luxury of absorbing some vitamin D, retreating indoors instead.
Thanks to the pristine large-scale windows we were still able to enjoy the amazing view regardless of the weather. The venue itself has a combination of high and low rise tables creating an intimate drinking and eating experience in any corner of the room. The stand out feature has to go to the dazzling silver bar that fronts a variety of fine wines, beer and spirits to guests as they step through the mahogany doors. Neutral colours are paraded in carpets, mirrors, candles and furnishings around the room and bring out the natural light of the venue.
The Atmosphere & Clientele:
Having visited at 1pm on a Wednesday, the atmosphere of Corney and Barrow was relaxed yet abuzz with the chatter of the lunch-time crowd alike. People drifted in and out of its doors; usually settling for a quick cup of coffee or sharing a bottle of wine over some chit chat or business plans.
The venue's location unsurprisingly drew a crowd of professionals in the main, but we spotted a few couples stopping by for a bite to eat which neatly broke up the suit and tie crowd. With its extensive wine list and central location I can imagine this place a hot spot amongst city slickers for an after work drink, not to mention a potential lunch spot for ladies on a catch-up mission.
Food and Drinks:
Our waiter Charlie recommended a bottle of Nelson Sauvignon Blanc that was dry but bursting with hints of lemon. Needless to say we took his knowledgeable advice and opted for a bottle. The wine was vibrant and fruity, going hand in hand with the entirety of each course.
We started off with a wonderful selection of olives, bread and dips (be sure to check out the ruby red pesto) before continuing with a main of the Casterbridge beef burger and beer battered Scottish haddock. The servings of both dishes were more than generous and cooked to perfection; the mint peas were the ideal moreish side dish for the haddock and the beef burger sauce made every bite a mouth-watering one. Fitting as much as we could into our content tummies, our waiter then enticed us to have a look at their dessert menu. Selecting the assorted ice-cream and black cherry cheesecake was an easy decision, and was the perfect guilty pleasure ending to a satisfying meal.
Summary:
Corney and Barrow deserves attention from every end of the spectrum due to its scenic location, attentive staff and varied wine and food menus. A clear winner for some sophisticated dining, it's a sound choice for any time of the year.
