A naughty night of cabaret and burlesque from Bouncy's Boudoir with help from one of our burlesque beauties including Didi DerriereMiss Sibyl VaneFou Fou KaboomCoco NobelMiss Kayleigh JaneBelle de BeauvoirAmy-Lou Black & Lady Kitty Noir.

Ticket price includes VIP Entry, a glass of bubbles & a line of white or black snuff - allowing you to skip the queue before 9pm & priority in the line thereafter.

CellarDoor was one of London's original cabaret & burlesque speakeasys and has a capacity of just 60. The word cabaret comes from the Old Dutch, meaning small room, and if you've never seen cabaret in such an intimate setting you've not really experienced it at all. The bar was originally an underground toilet outside the Lyceum, reputedly the haunt of Gielgud, Orton, Crisp & Wilde in its previous incarnation as the most infamous cottage in Theatreland - which is why we still serve Oscar's favourite tipple, the sublime Perrier-Jouet champagne.

We were expecting a burlesque show. What we got was 3 hours of (occasionally humorous, mostly cringey) cabaret with two, very brief, dances by a woman removing her clothes. Honestly, would not call it burlesque. A proper burlesque show is much more than what this was. Although she is clearly good at putting on a show. We paid for tickets which we (wrongly) assumed meant exclusive entry to a very small club for an intimate show. What it meant was we did not get guaranteed seats (although we luckily arrived early enough to get seats) and ended up sitting next to people who had not paid for any entry to the club. We did get a drink and a line of snuff for the fee though. The club became very busy with a couple of larger groups coming in. The staff then seemed to do some musical chairs with customers already seated to be able to squeeze more people in. A bit unprofessional and did seem to cause some disgruntlement amongst patrons. Drinks were priced ok for London however the 20% gratuity after 8pm is excessive. We did get table service but only because we were seated. Those who weren't had to order at the bar and still pay the gratuity. Apparently it's for the live acts..... which we thought the price of the tickets covered? Except you didn't need a ticket to even get in. Missed a trick there. And apparently London doesn't pay minimum or living wage so everyone adds gratuity onto their bills(!) Honestly if we hadn't forked out for a ticket in the first place we would have left in the first 10 minutes. But British stubbornness and tight fistedness over our coin encouraged us to stay. I've definitely had worse nights out. But it was not what I was expecting based on the description and the payment made. If you fancy seeing the show for free, just get there before 9pm and you're sorted. Honestly I think it's a bit of an insult to the dancer to have free entry. She's getting her kit off for people who have just stumbled in, when burlesque should be about exclusivity and intimacy. Even if the ticket price is a fiver, it should be a closed door event.

Thanks for your review although I really do not understand many of your points. 1. As it says in the first line of the listing this is a cabaret show. eg One of London's best kept secrets is the burlesque beauties that occasionally appear during the cabaret show at CellarDoor, Covent Garden's cult cabaret club. 2. Our experienced burlesque stars are indeed performing burlesque! 3. The listing is also very clear and states you are paying for a glass of bubbles, snuff, guaranteed entry before 9pm and priority entry afterwards. eg Ticket price includes VIP Entry, a glass of bubbles & a line of white or black snuff - allowing you to skip the queue before 9pm & priority in the line thereafter. 4. I would also add that, given the bubbles and snuff included in the price, you are only paying a fiver to guarantee entry (or priority in the queue after 9pm).. 5. We do sometimes ask customers who are occupying more than one seat to squeeze up; just as happens in small live venues from the Edinburgh Fringe to Hell's Kitchen in New York. 6. For the avoidance of doubt we pay well above the London Living Wage at CellarDoor and only add a 10% service charge (unlike many bars that now charge up to 15%) all of which is paid to the bar staff. After 9pm a further 10% 'live not dead' gratuity is added all of which goes towards paying the artistes' fees. 7. CellarDoor survives on drink sales and thus whether you pay for guaranteed entry or not, you will be expected to buy drinks during your visit - entry might be free (for those who do not want to guarantee entry) but you are required to spend as otherwise we would soon go out of business. 8. I am surprised you found the show cringey - Bouncy & Alice are two of the most experienced cabaret ladies on the London circuit and have been performing regularly at CellarDoor for over a decade. As you say the venue becomes very crowded because they are very popular. I think we'll just have to agree CellarDoor is not for you but thankfully (as the hundreds of reviews on Google and Trip Advisor prove) it is one of London's best loved venues - even referenced by a former Mayor of London, in one of his final speeches as mayor, as an example of what makes London unique.
