Throughout history there have been societies of closed membership and covert purpose. From the Knights Templars to the freemasons, clandestine organisations from the Ancient World to the present day have come to gain a powerful hold upon the popular imagination. Focusing on the origin of Freemasonry in London, in his talk David Barrett will explore the allure of esoteric religious beliefs, the hidden history of our desire for secret knowledge and the societies that preserve it.

In 1934 the famous ghost hunter and writer Elliott O'Donnell published a book on the Strange Cults and Secret Societies of Modern London. His book was an exposé of many covert organisations including the Thirteen society, the Black brothers, Chinese secret societies and black magic, the Mafia, the Tree cults, the Suicide Society and the Cult of Cruelty. In his book O'Donnell revealed stories of ghosts, murder, crime, strange disappearances, paganism, supernatural events and the occult of his time. In his talk, the Reverend Alan Walker will illuminate the stories of O'Donnell's infamous book and will take us on a strange journey into the parlours and private clubs that proliferated in the murky world of  pre-war London
