It may be part of a well known bar group, but with a buzzing atmosphere, great drinks offers, and perhaps the friendliest staff in London, Be At One King’s Cross has a personality all of its own.
The Venue:
With a nifty central location on the King’s Cross end of Caledonian Road, this branch of Be At One is easy to find.
Big windows light up an otherwise quite dark bar with deep wood and dim lighting. Stylish without being overtly trendy, there’s some exposed brickwork and cool fixtures, but overall the bar has an approachable look with deep booths and smaller tables providing ample seating.
The Atmosphere & Clientele:
For a Monday night, Be At One was bustling, with lots of small groups of young professionals and students, along with a few couples, filing in for some post-weekend tipples and chats. Lively chart music playing overhead added to the vibe without being too loud to talk.
Of course the staff are as key to the feel of Be At One as the cocktails, and when it comes to service, you feel like you’ve woken up on the other side of the Atlantic. Utterly attentive, super friendly, and incredibly upbeat, whether it was a Monday evening, or a Saturday night, I feel like the staff would have been just as hyper and helpful. Even when it came to emptying the bar out at midnight, they had as energetic a demeanour as if they'd just started their shift.
The Food & Drinks:
The food menu in Be At One King’s Cross is small, but ample (after all, we’re there for the bevvies, not the eats.) We opted for one of each of the two options on the menu, some nachos and a hotdog. The nachos made an adequate accompaniment to the margaritas we were quaffing while we ate, while the hotdog was delicious, if a little on the messy side.
As for the drinks, Be At One boasts one of the most extensive cocktail menus in the area. Needless to say, it’s hard to choose, but with two-for-one cocktails at happy hour, sampling a few on the menu is more within your budget than you’d think. The frozen margaritas are pretty good, (if not quite as potent as I’d like), as was the neon zombie (though you’ll need a sour tooth for that one!) but my favourite was the Brazilian Monk, a boozy dessert in a glass, with hazelnut liqueur, chocolate liqueur and Kahlua blended with vanilla ice-cream. Eh, yum!
Summary:
Be At One King’s Cross is a cool bar with great happy hours and a lively atmosphere, making it a pretentious-free place to enjoy drinks normally reserved for the flusher folk among us. The perfect spot for after work tipples or gathering with friends for a few bevvies before a big night out.
