London Skyscraper As Tall As the Shard Given Go-Ahead: Everything You Need To Know About One Undershaft

One Undershaft New Skyscraper In London.

The brand-new skyscraper will be the joint tallest building in Western Europe.

After years of deliberation, One Undershaft has finally been approved for construction, which is set to begin later this year. The building will rival The Shard in height, meaning it will have to share its title as the tallest building in London and Western Europe.

London's New Skyscraper - One Undershaft

It's been a long old slog for the developers of the brand new building, as they've been forced to go back to the drawing board time and time again following opposition to the design plans. But at long last, the following plans were approved late last year by the City of London's Planning Applications Sub-Committee - almost eight years after the initial idea was put forward:

  • One Undershaft will take over Horizon 22 at 22 Bishopsgate as the home of London's highest viewing platform.
  • It aims to incorporate plenty of greenery to emulate other viewing platforms like Sky Garden and The Garden at 120, while also including a public viewing space with a glass floor.
  • Office spaces and a children's education hub in collaboration with the London Museum will also feature, as well as retail outlets, restaurants and bars from floors 10 to 12.

Where Will One Undershaft Be Located?

Standing at 309.6m tall, One Undershaft will be situated in men-in-suits' City of London, between the Gherkin and the Leadenhall Building.

When Will One Undershaft Open?

Works are set to commence in the later months of 2025 and completion is expected in 2029.
