We Tried Mezze And Cocktails At East London's Hottest New Rooftop: Kaso One Hundred Shoreditch Review

There's no shortage of trendy bars and restaurants in Shoreditch, but it's still pretty exciting when a new one hits the scene. I'd heard good things about stylish hotel One Hundred Shoreditch, so when they reveled their brand new rooftop venue Kaso, complete with a leafy terrace? I was quick off the mark to secure myself a booking at this sun-soaked spot, inspired by the Eastern Mediterranean heritage of Chef Ilknur Celik.

Pretty in pink: this place is a real looker.

We were whisked up to the 7th floor and immediately met with a lively space filled with plants, pale pink tiles and natural light, giving in a garden-like feeling that screamed summer. Luckily the weather was playing ball on this day, so we opted for a table on their outdoor terrace, overlooking the streets of Shoreditch below. And as we'd arrived at 7pm, we were in the perfect position to watch the sun setting behind London's skyscrapers. You'll also find DJs here from 9pm every Friday and Saturday, but we decided to get there slightly earlier for a more chilled experience.

After trying and failing to capture a picture that did the views justice, we were ready to enjoy some cocktails. My choice was the Sundown Date (£12): a sugary mix of pineapple honey liqueur and date syrup, topped off with a slice of dried pineapple to add to the vivid yellow concoction. This sweet, fruity blend was a strong start to the meal, though I'm not sure I could've drank more than one as it was quite the sugar hit. My dinner date went for a Kaiki (£12) instead, an equally fruit-forward blend of honeydew melon, Ouzo and lemonade, which had a slightly aniseed-like taste to it from the Greek spirit.

Views From One Hundred Shoreditch Rooftop | DesignMyNight

The Kaso One Hundred Shoreditch reviews don't do justice to the rooftop views.

We were advised to order three small plates per person, and that turned out to be just the right amount. The Kaso One Hundred Shoreditch menu is split into three sections: cold mezze, hot mezze and specials, and we picked dishes from across all of them. First to arrive was the hummus (£6), which we paired with a portion of flatbread (£3). The dip was smooth and nutty tasting, with a pool of chilli oil in the centre. The bread was soft and flaky, perfect for scooping up big chunks of hummus, though if you order more than one dip I'd definitely advise doubling up on the flatbread, as we quickly demolished it.

Next up were the hot dishes, the first of which was a plate of roasted peppers (£11), dripping in olive oil and paired with a creamy yoghurt sauce. There was a mix of Padron peppers coated in a dusting of parmesan, and soft, flavourful red peppers that worked beautifully with the mild, tangy sauce. This arrived alongside the feta cheese borek (£14) that we both agreed was our favourite dish of the night. This crumbly pie was made with layers of thin, crispy filo pastry, with generous helpings of rich feta between them, sprinkled with pine nuts and sprigs of mint throughout - a delicious combination.

Share a Mediterranean feast at Kaso.

Last but not least, we sampled two plates from the specials section. The harissa chicken (£18) had a mild spice to it, cut into tender, bitesize pieces and served on a bed of fresh salad. Our second pick was the roasted aubergine (£16), cooked to perfection with a melt-in-the-mouth texture to it, though we weren't as big a fan of the zhoug and tahini sauce combination on top.

Firmly addicted to the views and summer vibes at this point, we couldn't leave without another drink. I chose a simple glass of Greek Gaia rosé (£9), which was a happy medium between sweet and dry, while my partner decided on another cocktail. His pick was the Kasonist (£12), combining watermelon Grey Goose with sweet Greek wine to make a sweet, baby pink concoction.

The DesignMyNight Digest

Kaso London is an impressive newcomer on the crowded rooftop scene, and their gorgeous terrace is the perfect place to spend a summer's evening. It has a trendy, Instagrammable vibe to it without feeling like its trying too hard, and the views speak for themselves. I'd definitely recommend ordering three plates per person, and the feta borek deserves a special mention. So if you like alfresco Mediterranean eats, signature cocktails and sunsets, be sure to add the One Hundred Shoreditch rooftop to your list.
