Purveyors of Jewish soul food and Hoxton Street’s prize Reuben, Monty’s Deli have got some news that’s set to get any and all salt beef fans very hot under the collar. The bar and restaurant is extending its already renowned brunch selection to an all-day affair, perfect whether you’re up with the lark for your latkes or stopping in for some late-afternoon lox, and we went down to survey the goods.
We kicked off proceedings with an egg cream - made from milk, chocolate syrup, soda water and exactly zero eggs, it’s been a staple on New York deli and diner menus since the early 20th century. Somewhere between a float and a fizzy milkshake, it’s sweet, frothy and refreshing, but you’ve gotta get it down you fast or risk losing both the froth and the fizz.
One of Monty’s most unique offerings are their egg challah buns which come spilling over with your choice of cheese, pastrami, tomato or salmon. I opt for the pastrami and cheese option and between gooey cheese, salty meat and oozing egg patty the delicate little dish proves to be deliciously messy.
To finish, the toasted chocolate babka is an easy choice. Crisped to chewy perfection it comes topped with an icy boulder of vanilla ice cream and brings a simple brunch to decadent close.
