Tell us who you are and what you do.
I’m a consultant to the bar industry and select brands, a sought-after judge for worldwide competitions and former President of the United Kingdom Bartenders’ Guild. I have several best-selling books and barware products that exemplify the quality, talent and experience he brings to the industry. I’ve been given the name, The Maestro, and have been making drinks for more than 40 years, from humble beginnings on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, where I made his first cocktail at the age of 12, to a succession of top hotel bars, private members clubs, and exclusive cocktail bars worldwide.
Tell us more about Velvet by Salvatore Calabrese and why people should visit.
I have always said that a great bar is like a theatre and there is no better theatre than the Velvet Bar; a sumptuous luxurious room, where the music of the shaker meets the music of the pianist. The bar counter is where my talented team produce our cocktails which are the stars of the show.
If anyone is ordering just one cocktail at your bar, which one and why?
If I had to make a choice I would suggest my martini, I always say it took God 6 days to create the world and it took me 5 days to create the perfect martini - super cool, super dry! Our menu is designed to fulfil any expectation. We are open to any request, you may choose from our latest creations or a timeless classic and, of course, one of my own classic recipes.
What are your thoughts on the London bar scene and how does Velvet by Salvatore Calabrese fit in?
The more I travel it proves that London is the capital of the cocktail bar world! And at Velvet, we offer only the best of the best. It has an incredible ambience and service; the final touch comes from our amazing cocktails.
