After starting out life in Brixton in 2021, Sushi Revolution (from Tom Blackshaw, previously of Chotto Matte, and Aidan Bryan who worked with Tom at Sticks'n'Sushi) quickly became one of South London’s go-tos for high-quality, creative Japanese food at an affordable price. After such popularity, it only made sense for them to open another outpost - which they did this summer in East London's most-buzzing neighbourhood, Shoreditch. As a sushi fiend that works in the City, I of course had to go check out the menu at this hot new launch.
Found just a short walk from Great Eastern Street, down a quiet alleyway, the restaurant offered us a little calm from the hubbub of the City of London. Inside, the spacious restaurant showcased a minimalist style, with a mix of neutral grey and wooden tones, complemented by pops of colour from a luscious living wall, which had their logo lit up in neon right in the middle. As we settled into the evening, catching up about our days, we ordered a bottle of sake – the Hakutsuru Junmai (300ml for £26). Light and citrussy, it was the perfect, easy-drinking accompaniment for the feast of sushi we were about to consume.
After a recommendation from the waiter, we dug into the chicken karaage nanban (£9), which was a great decision. While the meat was incredibly succulent, the crispy coating offered a delicious crunch, plus the flavours of sesame, tonkatsu and yuzu kosho mayo married together beautifully. And, at a place called Sushi Revolution, we of course had to try some of their signature rolls - the soft shell crab roll (£13.50) arrived as four huge, seaweed-wrapped rolls on a tangy bed of teriyaki and kimchee hummus, with crispy tempura crab nestled within, accompanied by spring onion, avocado and a little tobiko.
Then came the yuzu salmon kaburimaki (£14); filled with tempura prawn, avocado and mayo, topped with a fatty slab of raw salmon, yuzu mayo and nori powder, I couldn't get enough of these. Though we couldn't decide which maki to get (they all looked so appealing), thankfully there were a range of different platters available, each offering a different mix of rolls. We went for the dragon maki platter (£18), which consisted of the ebi dragon, tuna revolution, salmon picante and ceviche. Each roll was presented immaculately and a total flavour sensation, plus you could really tell that high-quality ingredients were used. And, of course, we had to get a round of sashimi in, ordered five pieces of salmon sashimi (£9.50) and five of maguro tuna sashimi (£10.50), both of which were thick, rich and superbly fresh.
Finally, we dove into the panko popcorn shrimp (£10), gorgeous, juicy morsels that bagged so much flavour from the tangy, spicy sauce and the addition of parmesan. Finishing on something sweet, we shared a couple of mango and coconut mochi (£3.25 per piece), as well as the gooey, indulgent brownie bites (£2.50 per piece), which both brought a lovely end to a fantastic meal.
The DesignMyNight Digest
I had a fabulous evening at Sushi Revolution Shoreditch - not only was it a relaxing place to dine (which is definitely hard to find in Shoreditch), but the staff were welcoming and knowledgeable, plus the food? It was absolutely delicious - I loved the mix of classic and contemporary dishes, as well as the affordable price tag... I'll definitely be back again when I'm next craving sushi after work.
