Just when you thought the axe-throwing anarchists at Whistle Punks couldn't make their bar games any more potentially life-threatening they go and add dynamite to the mix. Setting up shop at Southbank's Bargehouse, this latest pop-up from the steel-spinners is bringing one of Colombia's most famous sports to the UK for the first time in the form of the Tejo Social.
Tejo (pronounced Tey-Ho) is a game of precision and pyrotechnics. Invented over 450 years ago, the aim is simple: chuck a metal puck at a loaded target and watch it go off with a bang. Sounds dangerous? It probably is if you're left to your own devices, but luckily there'll be a host of Tejo experts on hand to offer direction on how to master the pastime without singeing too many eyebrows.
Each session lasts around 45 minutes, but don't go rushing off afterwards as Bargehouse will be transforming into a South American haven full of delicious street food and a few choice tipples. Get stuck into empanadas, calentada and buñuelos, washed down with Colombian Single Origin espresso martinis, Club Colombia beers and Caleño, a tropical non-alcohol spirit inspired by the country.
The Tejo Social Pop Up runs from the 8th - 19th of April at Bargehouse, OXO Tower Wharf, London, SE1 9PH. Tickets cost £15 and includes a 45-minute game with a Tejo expert.
