The way to my heart? A good burger and a wander around West London. Luckily, Sam's Kitchen in Hammersmith ticks both those boxes. This quaint, unassuming restaurant looks like a cutesy neighbourhood café.
Serving up everything from classic full English breakfasts to delicious crab crumpets, this place is brunch heaven. But on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, they serve smash and grab burgers and loaded fries. Originally starting as a summer pop-up series, Smash & Grab has now found a permanent home at Sam's Kitchen in Hammersmith, and we couldn't be more excited. As a lover of West London and a juicy burger, I had to check out them for myself.
DesignMyNight Reviews Smash & Grab At Sam's Kitchen
After a quick pint at The Crabtree, I headed 10 minutes up the road to Sam's Kitchen. I instantly loved the look and feel of this place - the large glass windows and soft yellow lighting made it seem like the perfect dinner destination.
There was a short queue when we arrived but we only waited a couple of minutes before being seated which was great. The place was full to the brim with friends bonding over beers and burgers which was the ideal Friday night vibe. We pondered over the menu to decided just how burger-crazy we wanted to go (spoiler alert: it was very burger crazy) and then went up to the counter to order.
Out of the four smash burgers available on the menu, I wanted to inhale all four. The chorizo jam burger sounded like an absolute dream and was incredibly tempting, but in the end I decided to opt for the single bacon cheeseburger (£11.50) and my boyfriend went for the double (£16).
Following on from their incredibly successful pop-up, Smash & Grab at Sam's Kitchen still serves all their burgers in cardboard takeaway boxes giving them that authentic street food feel which I loved. The burgers were juicy and delicious, incapsulating everything you want in a classic beef patty. The loaded fries (£6) were also a must and definitely didn't disappoint.
Stacked with pickled and crispy shallots, jalapenos and topped off with melted cheese, these fries were a melt-in-your-mouth sensation. We also tried the chorizo fries (£7.50) which, for me, were the star of the show. Who knew something as simple as hot chorizo drizzled over perfectly crunchy fries could taste so good - i'll be dreaming about these for the forseeable.
Naturally, we had to wash it all down with a nice cold beer and Sam's Kitchen serves up their own branded lager (£5.50) which certainly hits the spot. But if you're not a lover of lager, then one of their frozen Tommy's margaritas (£9) would also make for the perfect sip.
I didn't think I had it in me to indulge in a dessert, but after being convinced by the team, I knew that it was necessary. Short and sweet, the menu consists of six 'happy endings ice cream sandwiches' (£6.75). My boyfriend went for The Favourite - a blend of bourbon biscuit, malt parfait and salty chocolate crumbs, which was rich, creamy and delicious. I chose the East Side Vegan which was an amalgamation of corn and cashew ice cream, smoky salted caramel and corn cookies. It was a form of wizardry, I would never have been able to tell that this wasn't a dairy-fuelled dessert.
Smash & Grab At Sam's Kitchen: Overall
If it's a good burger you're after, then this place is a must-visit. Being so tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Hammersmith's busy streets, it makes for the perfect end-of-week treat. The smash burgers are some of the best in the West and the chorizo fries should be on everyone's radar (stock up on napkins to avoid any sauce stains). You can't book a table at this place so you'll likely be met with a queue, but it's definitely one that's worth the wait.
