Just because the world seems to be going into meltdown doesn’t mean that you have to. Sick of being cooped up in the house? Can’t manage another day in the same old sweatpants? Ditch that recycled air and head out to one of these gorgeous wide-open country spots that you can access without stepping foot onto public transport. Here’s our pick of the prettiest spaces just an hour in the car from London.

Surrey Hills
Now that the National Trust has made their parks and gardens free to explore, there’s never been a better excuse to visit the Surrey Hills. Head for the A24 where this area of outstanding natural beauty is touting charming walking trails, fresh spring blooms and gorgeous views of the National Park from Box Hill.
Lullingstone Country Park
Showcasing the best of British heritage, Lullingstone is home to one of England’s oldest family estates. With a stately castle, the River Darrant and must-see horticulture, this is one serene break from London. Plus, with The World Garden reopening on Friday 3rd April, there's plenty of reasons to visit this colourful Kentish pick.
Panshanger Park
Nestled between Welwyn Garden City and Hertford, Panshanger Park is a pretty open space just north of London. Expect ancient broadleaf woodland and views across the Mimram Valley. You’ve got Osprey Lake, the Orangery and Lady Hughes Wood, not to mention all sorts of unmissable wildlife from kingfishers and birds of prey to dragonflies and wildfowl.
Thorndon Country Park
So your favourite restaurant has closed and you’re sick of pasta for lunch? Grab yourself a picnic and check out Thorndon Country Park. Compromising of nature reserves, the scenic Abberton Reservoir and even a farm, this is one of Essex’s best hidden gems. Explore the whopping 226 hectares that home grazing animals (think deer, sheep and more), ancient woodland and photogenic scenery.
The Chilterns
Straddling, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire are The Chilterns. Get your outdoor Insta-fix of bluebells in bloom, lose yourself in the calming woodland and while away a tranquil afternoon with a trip to Chalk Streams. Oh, and did we mention the many equestrian centres and stables?
If you don’t fancy driving, we’d bet that our guide to London’s most wholesome village areas will be up your street.
