Description
London's famous jazz venue brings you some of the finest talents from around the world.
This time, we welcome a line up of jazz titans to our stage in November to celebrate 50 years of his classic album Paper Man, originally recorded in 1968 and featuring Gary Bartz, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Joe Chambers.
From early recordings with Jackie McLean on Blue Note Records in the 60s, Charles has gone on to become one of the all-time preeminent trumpeters in jazz. He co-founded Strata-East Records, a pioneering artist-owned jazz label and a pivotal platform for the independent jazz movement that emerged from civil rights in the 1970s (think Gil Scott-Heron: Winter In America), alongside Stanley Cowell.
As noted by legendary record producer Michael Cuscuna who wrote the original Paper Man album’s liner notes, “Tolliver is the quintessence of fluidity … a trumpeter of such flow, tone, control, lyricism, and creativity is, by definition, a major musician”.
Playing Paper Man from start to end will be:
Charles Tolliver – trumpet
Jesse Davis – sax
Buster Williams – bass
Lenny White – drums
Keith Brown – keys
