Sir Kirby Laing FREng (1916-2009) was a highly respected and admired British civil engineer. For many years he played a leading role in the growth of the family business, John Laing, which was responsible for many housing and infrastructure projects. The Kirby Laing Foundation funds a range of charitable projects including in the fields of youth development, medical research and the preservation of cultural and environmental heritage. The Foundation generously supported the Academy’s move to Prince Philip House, and the subsequent Forum for Engineering renovation project. |

This large, bright and day lit space has an abundance of modern technology allowing your guest speaker, panel speakers or company chairperson at the lectern to deliver a talk that is viewed, heard and absorbed by all. The space also serves extremely well for large dinners and receptions, and can even be halved with discreet electronically operated walls to create an event area in conjunction with an adjoining room – Al Qasimi North and Al Qasimi South. His Highness Dr Sheik Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of the emirate of Sharjah and member of its Supreme Council, is committed to education – particularly the education of engineers. The third largest of the United Arab Emirates, Sharjah offers an illustration of the central role that engineering can play in a nation’s social and cultural development. The lecture theatre will play a major role in engaging with the engineering community in the UK and across the globe.
