If you're looking for a cocktail-making class that doesn't scream 'hen party' and isn't ladened with sugary cocktails that leave your teeth blue - then the Northbank Cocktail Masterclass is the one for you. Offering an intimate two-hour masterclass over their sleek bar, you will learn to make the perfect Martini, among other classic drinks, with an experienced and knowledgeable bar tender.
The Venue:
Situated right on the Thames, Northbank is a lovely spot at which to spend an afternoon. Northbank always performs well as a place to dine, but it is also worth visiting here just to hit the bar: talented bar tenders are committed to their trade, attracting a stream of thirsty Londoners who have caught wind of the delights that hide behind the bar. Whilst the bar offers a great view of the river, Northbank's shining gem is their decking area outside, which is the perfect place for drinking Mojitos in the sunshine.
The Atmosphere & Clientele:
Arriving at Northbank, you immediately feel as though you are in good hands. The masterclass is set up across the intimate bar, where you will experience a one-to-one approach in cocktail-making. We arrived late in the afternoon - Northbank is a popular spot for after-work drinks and early dinner reservations, we decided this was a good time to make the best of the venue and the bar staff. Classy but not intimidating, the smooth and friendly service adds to the relaxed atmosphere.
The Drinks:
We were lucky enough to be looked after by Marco, whose passion for the art of cocktail-making shone through - he had a story for every cocktail, which made for an entertaining afternoon, in addition to the drinks. Before we started mixing, we learned about the history of the cocktail and were shown how each cocktail-making tool works - serious stuff. Now, to the drinks: first up was a Martini. Marco made both a gin and vodka version, explaining when and where premium spirits should be used and how not to drown out their subtle flavours with extra ingredients. The Martinis, made with care and to our taste, were smooth and certainly hit the spot.
Next up was the classic Cosmopolitan. A pale, watery pink, Marco's Cosmo was divine with no sickly sweet aftertaste - it was fresh, zesty with a subtle sweetness. An in-depth how-to on the perfect Mojito followed, and we are confident that we could now hold our own at any BBQ. We discussed the flavours we liked and what we usually avoided, and Marco challenged us by making us his favourite cocktail: an Old Fashioned. Not normally whiskey drinkers, with his expertise, we were converted. It just shows the difference a refined palate, skill and a dash of maverick spirit makes.
Summary:
Head to Northbank and take advantage of the vat of knowledge offered by your bar tender: safe in their skill and expertise, try out their recommendations and experience the passions that these guys have for their craft. At £25 for two hours, Northbank's cocktail masterclass is fantastic value and you will come away feeling entertained, enlightened - and perhaps a little tipsy. One thing you won't come away with though, thanks to their expert mixing, is a stonking headache.
