There's no denying that Wulf & Lamb have turned the vegan dial up a notch.
When Fat Gay Vegan pronounces somewhere as 'the best vegan restaurant in London' on his blog, I follow them on social media, I stalk them incessantly and I badger my boyfriend for a visit. Committing to all of the above, we made our way to Wulf & Lamb to see if FGV's claims of an 'almost spiritual' dining experience could be deemed to be true.
I'll be honest, I don't really want to bash about, because FGV was right. While the classic and demure interiors are the perfect echo for the Chelsea location, the food at Wulf & Lamb puts vegan chow on the pedestal it deserves.
Tucking into a tasting menu, the showcase of vegan dishes at Wulf & Lamb is humble, but the flavours are out of bounds beautiful. While dishes the likes of their spicy mango noodle salad with chilled vermicelli and chargrilled brocolli with a savoury porcini-and-garlic bread crumb dusting do perfectly at showing how plant-based can be simple but powerful, my major applause was saved for three other dishes.
The vegan burger is having a bit of a moment in London, but it's Wulf & Lamb that are the dark horse of the race. Their 'Wulf Burger' at £14.95 with seitan, pickle, red onion and cashew aioli with house sauerkraut was the patty of dreams. Not only does the burger hold itself, the seitan is spiced perfectly, pumped up by an aioli edge. But the fun didn't stop there. Alongside this was a mac & cheese that will have vegans forming a queue. Perfect in texture, with crispy doses dotted on top, it was simple, honest and ridiculously pleasant. Last but not least was the green coconut curry with sweet potato mash and in-season vegetables, aromatic thai roots, spices and coconut cream. Thick, silky and damn divine, the sweet potato was velvety addition that made the curry both light, yet warming.
Calling this 'fiercely kind food' is perfectly reasonable as a brand notion, but I need you to know one thing: it's 'fucking incredible food'.
