After a year of doom and gloom, a few glints of hope are finally starting to shine through. The latest? Joan, the new Shoreditch hotspot from ex-Caravan head chef, Niko Kontogiannatos.
Promising a Mediterranean menu that draws inspiration from Kontogiannatos’ Greek heritage, dishes will include salmon tartare with avocado sorbet and squid ink tuile, and pan-fried fillet of cod with n’duja cannellini beans stew and lemon gremolata.
Weekends will be a celebratory affair at the Bethnal Green Road spot, with fluffy stacks of pancakes served with milk chocolate cream, bananas and honeycomb. And for those not so keen on that 11am sugar rush? There’ll also be a variety of savoury options, including a mouthwatering hot smoked salmon and horseradish dish.
From the bread to the ice cream, everything will be made on site from scratch, with Niko enlisting some of London's top suppliers to stock his pantry. There will also be a small selection of local beers and classic cocktails on offer, perfect for a post-work from home treat.
