The anti-Rosetta Stone: A journey round the multilingual warning messages inside Kinder Surprise Eggs
Nestled deep within a Kinder Surprise Egg lies a treasury of linguistic delights: A tiny piece of paper presenting warning messages in 34 languages. Yet all is not what it seems. What seems at first to be the same message translated 34 times, is in fact a manuscript full of mysteries as profound as language itself.
Keith Kahn-Harris is a sociologist and writer. He recently published his seventh book, The Babel Message: A Love Letter to Language.
2B or not 2B? The secret life of pencils
The humble pencil. Armed with the question, “How do they get letters that tiny onto a surface that small?” Lydia Thornley has packed her best pencil case and set off on a voyage of nerdery to find out more. She’ll report back via wars, perfume, smuggling, bread, surgery, camels, Q and artisanal pencil sharpening.
Lydia Thornley is a graphic designer, creative director, illustrator and prolific filler of sketchbooks. Lydia likes pencils. People give her pencils. She even comes back from places with pencils as souvenirs. But she hardly ever draws with them.
Krampus: Have you been naughty or nice?
St Nicholas may bring good children rewards, but he has a companion who has different clients. Discover this central European tradition whose popularity is rising again. Close your eyes and wish for gifts … if you dare.
Deborah Hyde is a British sceptic, folklorist, cultural anthropologist, Ufologist, fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, and editor-in-chief of The Skeptic. Deborah wants to know why people believe in weird stuff. She attributes her fascination with the supernatural to having spent her childhood with mad aunties. She approaches the subject using the perspectives of psychology and history.
