Every Wednesday our host, MD & pianist Jason Lyon will present an international award winning jazz musician to perform with his trio followed by a showcase of talented musicians in a jazz jam session til late.
This week Jason is delighted to welcome saxophonist Tony Kofi, winner of Best Instrumentalist at the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards and Best Ensemble 2005 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Beautiful postbop blowing with delightful edges.
In 1991, Tony Kofi was part of UK's leading jazz group The Jazz Warriors; a hotbed of young talent in the London jazz scene. Tony was also vital part of Gary Crosby's Nu Troop; this was a big stepping stone for his solo and ensemble work, contributing massively to his own solo projects and educational projects.
Kofi's rise through the ranks has been one of the greatest stories in the UK's jazz scene over the last 10 years. His greatest achievement ‘All Is Know’ which won BBC Jazz Album of the Year was a culmination of 5 years’ study by Tony with his Monk Liberation Front project. His album gives a true contemporary feel while never losing sight of the tradition they represent.
