Showing at The Century, this powerful documentary explores the life and legacy of Pauline Oliveros, a groundbreaking American composer and pioneer of experimental music. A proud lesbian and feminist, Oliveros was born in Houston, Texas in 1932 and became renowned for her innovative mixed-media compositions in the 1960s, blending electronic sounds with light projections and theatrical performance. She was a key figure in the development of tape music and free improvisation, and her work remains foundational in the history of electronic music.



Oliveros believed in embracing the infinite variety of sound in our world, which she called “a grand composition.” She dedicated her life to teaching perceptual and listening skills, making music accessible and meaningful for both musicians and non-musicians. This led to her creation of “Deep Listening,” a meditative practice that encourages awareness of both external sounds and inner thoughts. For Oliveros, listening was not just an artistic act, but a way to foster collaboration, build community, and appreciate human diversity. This moving film celebrates her vision and message—one that feels more urgent and inspiring than ever.

    While the tour by Dr Green was very well presented and interesting, the little scenes in between were incredibly poorly planned and rehearsed, to comical effect, but below expectations at this price point. We were also expecting more than one small cup of hot chocolate halfway through the freezing cold tour, as the ticket cost of £35 is definitely on the high side for a packed group like this. We still enjoyed the tour itself, but expected a lot more.

    It pains me to give A Curious Invitation such a low review as I normally like their events but this one did not deliver what it promised. There was a lot of just standing around in the freezing cold and only one singular cup of hot chocolate per person. The music mentioned in the description was nowhere to be found. While Dr Green was a good host with lots of interesting facts, I think visiting the locations in this weather didn't add much to the experience as it was waaaay too cold to be standing around watching the performances. It seemed poorly planned and not properly thought out.
