Join actors, musicians and bestselling author Dr Matthew Green on a unique wine-fuelled Yuletide night walk through the slaughter grounds of Smithfield, plague pits of Charterhouse and long, twisting alleys of Clerkenwell with the spirits who hate Christmas rearing from the darkness,

With harrowing torch-lit performances from actors and musicians leaping out, Each attendee will be warmed up with a plenteous supply of piping-hot medieval wine

Meet a medieval anchoress, walled into a tiny cell, gazing dolefully out of her grille at the citizens making merry with their pagan Yuletide feasts.
Mingle with Bloody Mary as she drinks red wine, eats roast chicken, and watches Protestants burn like fairy lights decorating Smithfield.
Visit a frightening, lantern-framed plague pit  and hear the Vintner’s Widow’s account and song of living through the Black Death.
Gaze up at St John’s Gate, Clerkenwell, as a drunken watchman yells down at you, his lantern a pinprick of light through the battlements

Feel what it’s like to walk down an alleyway in Clerkenwell in the pitch black, the footsteps of a stranger right behind you, the silhouette of something diabolical ahead.

Hear, crouched beneath a colonnade, torch illuminating his face, the harrowing memoirs of a London link boy.

Witness Dickens with his pet raven, Grip, coursing through the streets in creative ecstasy, summoning ideas for Scrooge, our Christmas anti-hero.

Organiser

A Curious Invitation and Antique Beat
Antique Beat and A Curious Invitation host The London Month of the Dead, a festival or stts investigating the capital’s relationship with its deceased residents. Events will include a private view of the Museum of London’s bone archive, taxidermy workshops, macabre walking tours and private views and a programme of weekend death salons with talks on subjects ranging from public dissection and body snatching to reincarnation and funereal folklore with authorities in fields such as osteology, forensic pathology and the paranormal, who will offer their own perspectives and insights on mortality in the city. Each year the London Month of the Dead donates 20% of all ticket revenue to one of London's magnificent seven cemeteries. In 2017 all of the death salons and concerts will be hosted at the Dissenters and Anglican chapels at Kensal Green. In previous years the month's programme has centered around Brompton Cemetery but the chapel is now undergoing important restoration work, a project the London Month of the Dead is proud to have supported. The London Month of the Dead has been curated by a Curious Invitation and Antique Beat to inform, entertain and provoke on the subject of death and London cemeteries.

Stunning setting, fascinating talk, and the warming punch was a lovely touch! Two small pieces of feedback: the way this event was titled and described gave some members of my party much more of an impression that it would be about clothing - the historic fashion *worn* to funerals rather than the fashions in which they were conducted and the broader trends they followed. Some of my party also struggled to find the venue; the Kings College signs are confusing if you're from out of town and don't know Guy's Campus well. A sign on the courtyard gates or a map would have been so helpful for those unfamiliar with the area.
