Poppets are dolls used in sympathetic magic which are designed in the likeness of individuals in order to represent them in spells to help, heal or harm. The word “poppet” comes from the Middle Ages in England, originally meaning a small doll or child the source of the modern term of endearment, but the use of dolls to influence the fate of a person dates back much further.

In Egyptian times enemies of the Pharaoh Ramses III used wax images of him to bring about his death. In the third century BC the Greek poet Theocritus wrote of how a peasant girl Simaetha used erotic magic on her absent lover Delphis to get him to return to her by melting and burning wax dolls. Princess Caroline of Brunswick on the other hand allegedly jabbed pins into wax totems of her husband, the future George IV, in the hope of hastening his demise she didn’t succeed.

In this workshop Lucya Starza will talk about the history of effigies in both healing and cursing, and will offer a practical workshop in how to make a traditional poppet of protection for dark nights. The night will end with a spell to enchant them.

A Curious Invitation and Antique Beat
This year Antique Beat and A Curious Invitation will be hosting The London Month of the Dead, a series of 36 different events investigating the capital’s relationship with its deceased residents. Events will include a private view of the Museum of London’s bone archive, taxidermy workshops, macabre walking tours and private views and a programme of weekend death salons with talks on subjects ranging from public dissection and body snatching to reincarnation and funereal folklore. Each salon will feature a pair of speakers, authorities in fields such as osteology, forensic pathology and the paranormal, who will offer their own perspectives and insights on mortality in the city. Each year the London Month of the Dead donates 20% of all ticket revenue to one of London's magnificent seven cemeteries. In 2017 all of the death salons and concerts will be hosted at the Dissenters and Anglican chapels at Kensal Green. In previous years the month's programme has centered around Brompton Cemetery but the chapel is now undergoing important restoration work, a project the London Month of the Dead is proud to have supported. The London Month of the Dead has been curated by a Curious Invitation and Antique Beat to inform, entertain and provoke on the subject of death and London cemeteries.

Interesting topic, the speakers shared multiple examples; and the location was great. A bit disappointed with the organisation. The doors opened 15 min prior to the start, and the check in was very slow. Resulting in the event starting 15min late, and the speaker having to speak faster to finish on time. Considering the nb of people, opening 30 min prior the start would have been appropriate.

Stunning setting, fascinating talk, and the warming punch was a lovely touch! Two small pieces of feedback: the way this event was titled and described gave some members of my party much more of an impression that it would be about clothing - the historic fashion *worn* to funerals rather than the fashions in which they were conducted and the broader trends they followed. Some of my party also struggled to find the venue; the Kings College signs are confusing if you're from out of town and don't know Guy's Campus well. A sign on the courtyard gates or a map would have been so helpful for those unfamiliar with the area.
