While working as a photographer's model, gallery usher, and exotic dancer, Dorothy “Max” Prior witnessed the births of Adam and the Ants, The Monochrome Set, The Sex Pistols, and Throbbing Gristle, as well as drumming in her own cult band Rema Rema and recording with Industrial Records.
Join us at the Century for an in conversation with Max Prior where she be talking about her new book 69 Exhibition Road and also about her life as an adventurous, queer young person in late 1970s London. Her exuberant commentaries will illustrate the multilayered nature of the London music, art, and fashion worlds of the late 1970s, and the overlap between the early punk scene with the city's rapidly evolving club and queer cultures.
Max Prior will be in conversation about her work with Travis Elborough. Elborough is a is an author and social commentator, described by The Guardian as ‘one of Britain's finest pop cultural historians’. His books include The Bus We Loved, a history of London’s Routemaster bus; The Long-Player Goodbye, a hymn to vinyl records published as The Vinyl Countdown in the Unites States; Wish You Were Here, a survey of the British beside the seaside and A Walk in the Park, a loving exploration of public parks and green space, hailed as 'a fascinating, informative, revelatory book' by William Boyd.
