The Violet Hour

Description

The Violet Hour cocktail and wine bar in West Didsbury is a small but perfectly formed day-night venue that is a welcome addition to Burton Road. We love the name, too which is apparently from The Hour, a 1950s cocktail manifesto by Bernard DeVoto: “This is the violet hour, the hour of hush and wonder, when the affections grow and valor is reborn...”

The affections for this bar will certainly grow after a single visit – it's welcoming and friendly, with the sort of cosy bonhomie expected of prohibition-era bars. The interior gives a nod to this time too, with its bare brickwork and wooden floors, deep red chairs and, of course, its display of spirits used in a marvellous assortment of cocktails. Bespoke cocktails classes are available if you'd like to try your own hand - just ask at the bar.

The drinks menu balances old classics with new creations perfectly, and this is complemented with a wonderful collection of beers and wines – and a tidy choice of bar snacks. There are meat and cheese platters served on rustic boards, bread from a local bakery and pork scratchings and popcorn too. It's great for a daytime rendezvous (there are papers daily and free WiFi), or a good choice for drink and a catch up with friends.

You can make a free table reservation at The Violet Hour for food or drinks using the form at the top of this page - or even hire out the upstairs cocktail bar for your private party or event. And looking to add a little something to that party affair? The Violet Hour boast cocktail masterclasses at just £24.95 a head for those looking to conjure up their own delicious libations.

The Violet Hour - Cocktail Bar Review

Since trams came oh-so-quickly to South Manchester (ahead of schedule?! Who'd have thunk it!), there's simply no excuse for not exploring the 'burbs a bit more if you're a city centre dweller like myself. There are even several stops to choose from depending upon which segment of Didsbury you're headed…
