Band on the Wall Manchester - Club Review

Band on the Wall in Manchester’s Northern Quarter is a not-for-profit music venue run by Inner City music charity. Its eclectic programming of Funk, Folk, Soul, Reggae, Jazz, Blues, Roots, Rock, live music, classes and events stirred our attention, so we went along to join in the fun.

The Venue

Being a music venue since the 1930s, Band on the Wall knows how to do it properly. Often hosting band nights, the bands and DJs literally appear to be playing on the wall above the crowd. With a main music room and bar, and a smaller bar area to the side, complete with leather armchairs, this venue can cater to a multitude of events. Whether you’re looking for a place to have a chilled beverage whilst listening to some soul, or if you’re out for a wild one, Band on the Wall is capable of both. With disabled access and a mezzanine terrace overlooking the sights on the main floor below, everyone is welcome. It’s no wonder Band on the Wall has been celebrated as one of the best and most versatile entertainment venues in Manchester.

The Atmosphere and Clientele

We visited Band on the Wall on one of Mr Scruff’s Keep it Unreal monthly gigs. Being a regular, and popular live act, Mr Scruff brings in a faithful Mancunian following of bohemian and cool people of varying ages who are unified by their love of a melting pot of  quirky hip hop, disco, deep house, reggae, dubstep, latin beats and more. Band on the Wall also sees the likes of budding music professionals embarking onto music courses in association with the Manchester College. Being in the heart of the cosmopolitan music industry, Band on the Wall is the perfect place to take up a beginner’s guitar class, music technology tutorials and dance/fitness classes where you’re sure to meet like-minded learners and enthusiasts.

The Food and Drink

Mr Scruff owns his own tea café on Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter called Teacup, and sells all sorts of exotic and unusual teas which are available from a stall at Band on the Wall at Mr Scruff’s Keep it Unreal! On a non-Mr Scruff day, Band on the Wall serve a rotating menu in keeping with locally sourced and seasonal produce. They have been known to serve up a cracking slow cooked beef and chilli stew and barbecued jerk chicken amongst other yummy dishes. They have a fantastic meal deal offer: if you book a food table in advance for a two course meal and spend £12, your table will receive a free ticket for a future concert!
