Kendal Calling, Lowther Deer Park, The Lake District, 26th-28th July 2013
As arguably the pick of the British festival bunch, Kendal Calling has been making waves in musical circles since it was bestowed with the award for “Best Small Festival” in 2010 and 2011. Finding its roots within the settings of the Cumbrian hills, Kendal Calling has made a name for itself in recent years as one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the summer, transforming its humble beginnings of a 900 capacity two-day event to a 13,000 three-day musical epic. Having called Grate Farm home for two years, Kendal Calling had to relocate to Lowther Deer Park in 2009 to cope with the increasing demand of the British public.
Previous instalments have seen the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Blondie, Calvin Harris and The Streets grace the festival’s rural landscape, bringing with them a plethora of pyrotechnic explosions, well crafted lyrics and stunning sounds. Coupled with the festival’s quirky and extravagant attractions such as the Happy Slap Boutique and the Soap Box, 2013’s festival is set to send its campers into rapture.
Expect this year’s chapter to provide an electric and enchanted atmosphere for the encroaching masses. Billed as “an intimate liberating festival, a real hidden gem” by the Plump DJs, Lowther Deer Park and its inclusion of deer play host to a superabundance of International and local musical talent. Headlining this year’s main stage are legendary American hip-hop group Public Enemy, Scottish alt rock band Primal Scream, The Charlatans, groove extraordinaire Basement Jaxx, Seasick Steve and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr among others. In terms of the dance music supplied, expect to see the likes of drum & bass maven Roni Size, teenage duo Bondax, Fake Blood and Grooverider doing their thing in The Glow Tent whilst local bands like British Sea Power and The Heartbreaks perform on the Calling Out Stage.
With family friendly, creative vibes and a real sense of adventure, Kendal Calling is set to continue its trend of delivering a diverse and eclectic cast of artists to serenade the rustic backdrop of Lowther Deer Park. Given the manageable size of the festival you could easily meander around its idyllic setting without feeling you’re being rounded up like a flock of sheep as you might do at any other big name fest. So pack up those wellies, roll up that tent and venture forth to one of the most exciting festival prospects to emerge from the North in recent memory.
