Global hospitality brand, Nobu, is set to open their first Manchester site in the next few years.
Hospitality moguls, Nobu, are expanding their portfolio once more by venturing up north for the first time. Part-owned by none other than Robert De Niro, the brand will be opening a bar and restaurant in Manchester's brand-new skyscraper.
Destined to be the tallest skyscraper in the city, it'll also house the first Nobu-branded residences in the UK, offering a luxury living experience. The £360 million property development is expected to take place in Manchester city centre location near Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop, if planning permission is passed this year.

Where Will The New Nobu Hotel, Restaurant And Residences Be Located?
- Between Manchester Central and Deansgate Locks, building on the current Viadux Phase One development.
The brand-new Nobu site is set to open in what will be Manchester's tallest building, currently known as Viadux Phase 2, with the skyscraper designed by SimpsonHaugh Architects (the brains behind the nearby Beetham Tower, which was Manchester's first skyscraper).
This project from property developers, Salboy, builds upon the Viadux Phase One residential development next door to Manchester's former Central Station and Manchester Central Convention Complex, adding a 76-storey building to tower above the Grade II-listed Castlefield Viaduct. Once the 246-metre-high building is complete, it'll be the UK's tallest outside of London.
What Will The New Nobu Manchester Opening Include?
Here's what to expect from the new Nobu opening:
- A signature Nobu restaurant and bar that will serve their classic Japanese cuisine with Peruvian influences.
- 160 luxury hotel rooms to stay in for a boujee night or two away.
- 452 residences (the first in the UK).
Those living in the new complex will be able to take advantage of Nobu's luxury experiences, including deluxe dining, room service, exclusive access to the swimming pool, spa, garden and gym.
When Will Nobu Manchester Open?
- 2031
Hold off booking annual leave, as this place still needs planning permission approval - with councillors expected to vote in the coming weeks. Once they get the green light, construction is estimated to take five-and-a-half years to complete, so it could be opening in around 2031.
Commenting on the project, Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hospitality, states: “We are proud to include Manchester in our global collection, with its vibrant culture and growing global status...
“Having grown up in the area, I am personally immensely proud of this project in a city that continues its evolution as a global destination for luxury hospitality. Manchester is home to world-class developments, a thriving culinary scene, and a growing demand for high-end lifestyle experiences.
“None of our locations are cookie cutter; we wholeheartedly embrace the spirit of each destination. We are delighted to be working with Salboy to blend the Nobu experience with the essence of Manchester.”
With equal praise for Nobu in return, Simon Ismail, co-founder of Salboy, adds: “This £360 million deal for Nobu Manchester will take the city to new heights in terms of service, cuisine, and experience. Chef Nobu’s cuisine, renowned worldwide, has influenced dining across the globe.
“Even if you haven’t dined at a Nobu restaurant, you have likely experienced dishes inspired by his innovations. As the original innovator in fine dining, Chef Nobu popularised a blend of cuisines in exciting new ways, leaving a lasting influence on every modern restaurant you see today. We are excited to unveil plans for the UK’s first Nobu-branded residences and hotel, with this signature hospitality offering at its heart.”
About Nobu
Founded in 1987 by chef Nobu Matsuhisa, the brand started off as a quaint restaurant in Los Angeles. So how did it become a global hospitality brand? The LA-based venue was frequently visited by A-lister, Robert De Niro, who decided to invest in the space.
He then took the brand to New York in September 1994, opening in the Tribeca neighbourhood. Since then, the brand has multiplied its sites and now has more than 36 restaurants and 50 hotels across the world.
