The Best Pizza In Sydney

While the history of this delicious, cheesy dish begins in the 1800s, the first pizza shop opened in Australia in 1961 after immigrant Greeks and Italians introduced it after the Second World War. Since then, word (and slices) on the street has spread and there are now over 3000 restaurants of the kind to date. From delicious wood-fired beauties in the CBD to blistered dough with contemporary toppings such as clams or pumpkin paste, we've compiled a guide to help you find the best pizza places in Sydney.

The Vicar

A gorgeous spot in The Hills and inspired by Dural's history and surrounds, The Vicar is a restaurant sporting a rustic interior and two island bars, as well as a tempting bistro menu. You'll find a quaint courtyard where you can set up camp underneath pergolas and vibrant trees, or in the expansive, modern dining area featuring exposed brickwork and a pool table. On the menu, there are fresh pasta dishes, sharing plates and burgers, but most importantly, pizza. Their offering involves the option of a gluten-free base or regular, topped with the likes of roasted eggplant, capsicum, parmesan and bocconcini, plus a classic ham and pineapple starting from $22 each.

Bella Brutta

For the best pizza in Sydney, Australia, it's got to be Bella Brutta on King Street. Born from the brains behind LP's Quality Meats and Porteño, which includes co-owner Luke Powell, it's a casual eatery whose name directly translates as 'beautiful ugly'. The cool space is completed with shabby chic walls and a nine-metre bar where guests can dine and watch their delicious eats take form and slide into a flaming hot pizza oven. Toppings are innovative and creative here, with Cloudy Bay clams, pecorino and fermented chilli stealing the show, alongside a decadent tiramisu for dessert. And if you're feeling thirsty? Wash down your meal with a refreshing limoncello spritz.

Matteo

When it comes to the best pizza in Sydney CBD, Matteo is right up there, if not miles ahead, transporting its guests to Milan with tempting, blistered crusts and gooey, cheesy insides. The main dining room is flooded with natural light during the day and is surrounded by white glossy tiles, soft curtains and low-hanging lights. Before the main, Neapolitan-style event, it's worth delving into the antipasti menu featuring oysters, rosemary flatbread and housemade brioche served alongside beef tartare. Wood-fried pizzas include lashings of fior di latte, truffle paste and stracciaella, and some even sport pumpkin bases. Every week, there's a signature chef special to look forward to too, among the regulars that are simply to die for.

Coogee Pavilion

Known as 'The Pav' among locals, Coogee Pavilion is a beautiful and bright three-floored restaurant and bar that's perfect for casual meals and meet-ups with friends. Loft-style interiors prevail in this space, alongside textured white walls and bursts of greenery - you'll find cocktail bars on the second level as well as one of the best rooftops in the city with ocean views the further up you go, but the ground floor is where the scrumptious slices are at. Home to a selection of food that nods to seaside dining, it also whips up wood-fired delights in the form of Vinnie's Pizza, whose toppings include San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte and hot salame.
