Graduating from Canterbury College of Art in 1968 David moved to London and began his working life in the record industry, designing album covers and publicity material at Decca Records. Moving on to EMI Records in 1974 he designed covers for established favourites, Cliff Richard and Glen Campbell, to noisier newcomers Wire, Dr Feelgood and X-Ray Spex. Going freelance in 1981, he continued to produce cover designs for the likes of XTC, Thomas Dolby and UB40, as well as book jackets for Penguin and Puffin Books.
In 1983 David was a founder member of Clinic, a London based design and advertising company. During the following twenty-four years their clients included Virgin Megastores, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Records, Virgin Active, Fremantle Media, BSkyB, Barclays, ITV, BBC and Network Rail.
Retiring in 2007, David set about pursuing all those ideas and things that he never found time for while engaged in full-time employment. In his newly erected garden studio in Guildford he squeezed out a tube of paint, picked up a brush and applied paint to canvas. This, in itself, was not new to him, but from then on rather than answering a client’s brief David became the client, free to write and fulfil his own brief. His final commission in the music business was a DVD cover for the Oasis 2007, ‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’ World tour. If you’re going, go out with a bang!!
Ever since David hasn’t looked back, except in the continuation of his fascination with popular culture. Much of the source, inspiration and subject matter is still to be found in music, literature, film and TV, as well as current affairs and travel. His work is often thematic, creating pieces that are part of an ongoing series, either as paintings, limited edition prints or photographs.
