Located in Gosforth, Three Mile is found inside the Great North Hotel - a top choice for quality British produce in luxurious surrounds. Having been awarded a four-star AA accreditation, this hotel-restaurant was awarded North East Pub of the year in 2022 - and for good reason.

While there are some international dishes on the menu, they specialise in British fare - we're talking 10-oz rump steaks, chicken breast topped with a poached egg, cured meat platters and much more.

As You Like It

Located right on the border between Jesmond and the city centre, As You Like It is a spacious restaurant bar full of cosy dining spaces, spanning across three floors. Expect rustic wooden interiors, with unique mismatching furniture and comfy sofas to relax on.

They serve a spectacular Sunday roast here, alongside classic dishes like beer-battered North Sea haddock, slow-cooked red wine beef and sticky toffee pudding. You can wash this down with all kinds of creative cocktails, and they even offer afternoon tea as well.

Peace and Loaf

Peace and Loaf is a high-end spot in Jesmond that was founded by MasterChef: The Professionals finalist Dave Coulson. Not only does it have two AA Rosettes to its name, but it's been awarded a place in the Michelin Guide as well. Its unique twists on seasonal British cuisine is served in the form of set and tasting menus - which start from only £25 per person for lunch.

Expect the likes of sea bass served with mussels or a hearty chicken pie, with a separate vegetarian menu that includes artichoke with sprouts and pumpkin gnocchi. As for the venue itself, expect sultry dark interiors with exposed brick walls, comfy leather booths and lots of quirky pieces of art on display.

Miller & Carter

One of the best British restaurants in Newcastle city centre, Miller and Carter is found on Mosley Street. This swish steakhouse is decked out in bright red furnishings, with multiple floors full of cosy dining spots. Expect huge golden shelves filled with wine and pretty hanging lights surrounding you, making for a sophisticated meal out.

They're best known for their British and Irish steaks, which are aged for a minimum of 30 days using both wet and dry techniques. Choose between ribeye, Chateaubriand and much more, alongside other dishes such as pan-roasted lamb rump, roasted squash salad or grilled sea bass fillet.

Fern Dining Room & Bar

Tucked away inside the beautiful Jesmond Dene House, Fern Dining Room & Bar is a stunning British restaurant in leafy surrounds. Their floor-to-ceiling windows provide an unrivalled view of the grounds outside, while the interiors promise cosy armchair seating, high ceilings and lots of natural light.

This upmarket venue boasts a talented team of chefs who combine classic dishes with modern cooking techniques, served with an informal Geordie hospitality. Start off with pig's head terrine or celeriac velouté, before indulging in everything from salt-aged ribeye steaks to a double-baked cheese and spinach soufflé - though the menu changes seasonally.

The Broad Chare

Head down to the Quayside to discover The Broad Chare, a charming gastropub that's been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand every single year since it opened in 2011 - as well as being included in The Top 50 Gastro Pubs list. They're all about good quality food with no frills, served in cosy surrounds that consist of leather booths and rustic wooden furnishings. You'll always receive a warm welcome here, alongside a delicious pint of real ale.

Whether you're eating inside or in their sunny beer garden, you can expect the likes of North sea cod with braised fennel, slow-roasted lamb shoulder or crown prince pumpkin with lentils and chestnuts - alongside scrumptious Sunday roasts. Plus, they serve elevated bar snacks if you're not in the mood for a full meal.

Blackfriars Restaurant

This stunning space is found inside a former 13th century Friary, making it one of the oldest purpose-built eateries in the country, a popular choice for weddings and other elegant events. Expect traditional interiors like high ceilings, leather armchairs and wooden tables, alongside a brilliant selection of fine wines and locally brewed beer.

Though there's a lot of history to the venue, the Blackfriars Newcastle menu is all about modern cooking. They use only the highest quality seasonal produce in their dishes, which range from sumptuous Sunday roasts to catch of the day from the nearby North Shields fish market or caramelised polenta with smoked baby onions.

House of Tides

If you're searching for the best British restaurants in Newcastle upon Tyne, then House of Tides might just be the answer. Nestled inside a restored, Grade I-listed 16th Century former merchant's town house, the venue maintains traditional interiors featuring original 16th century flagstones, exposed beams and rustic wooden furniture.

Local restauranteurs, and the first to own two Michelin star restaurants in the city, Kenny and Abbie Atkinson set this place up in 2014, endeavouring to bring diners the very highest quality of British food in comfortable surrounds. While looking out over the river, you can devour plates of beef cheek, cod with mussels and chicken liver parfait on their tasting menu, which comes in at £115 per person.
