The Muddler Newcastle

One of the most decadent restaurants in the city, The Muddler is a pan-Asian eatery on Grey Street. Decorated with sultry dark furnishings and marble tables, illuminated by low lighting, this intimate spot is the perfect pick for date night. Plus, there's an outdoor terrace that's perfect for watching the world go by while you dine.

They specialise in Japanese cuisine, with a sushi section on their menu that features everything from spicy tuna and avocado rolls to asparagus maki. Larger plates include teriyaki salmon, chicken katsu curry and vegetable tempura, with a wide variety of cocktails to accompany your meal.

Hanahana Newcastle

Located close to Chinatown, Hanahana is a welcoming restaurant specialising in Teppanyaki grill cooking. Watch as their experienced chefs cook over flames right in front of you, and you can even cook some dishes at the table yourself.

The relaxed venue features red leather seating and counter-style tables where you'll be both entertained and waited on. Dishes range from fresh half lobster to lamb steak and sushi platters, so there really is something for everyone.

Butakun

A trendy spot on Percy Street, Butakun is a top choice of Japanese restaurants in Newcastle city centre. It's gained quite a reputation for itself since opening in 2022, thanks to an extensive menu of authentic eats and charming interiors that feature exposed brick walls, foliage and quirky neon signs.

Sip sake by the glass or one of more than 20 different wines, while munching on grilled tiger prawns, soft shell crab tempura rolls, seared nigiri and more. They also offer bento boxes with a daily selection of fresh sashimi, as well as omakase menus starting from only £18.80 per person.

Geisha

Worth venturing a little outside the city centre for, Geisha is a pan-Asian restaurant in Benton that flaunts some of the most Instagrammable interiors around. It's filled with Japanese-inspired artwork, alongside cherry blossom and colourful paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling, and the dishes are just as beautiful.

Choose between hearty bowls of ramen, Japanese wagyu burgers, chicken katsu curry and more - with a wide variety of sushi available too. What's more, you can enjoy a fantastic choice of whisky, sake and signature cocktails - our favourite is the raspberry ripple pina colada.

Fujiyama Teppanyaki Restaurant

For some top quality teppanyaki in Newcastle, look no further than Bath Street haunt Fujiyama. This vibrant destination has been around since 1997, boasting bright red interiors, Japanese-inspired artwork and pretty fairy lights. But the main attraction is that each table is centred around its own grill, where your own personal chef will prepare a meal right in front of your eyes.

They cook up all sorts on the hotplates here, ranging from salmon steak and lobster to chicken teriyaki. There are plant-based dishes available too, including vegetable gyoza dumplings to miso soya bean soup.

Aveika

If you're after a Japanese restaurant on Newcastle's Quayside, Aveika is always a great choice. Combining late-night cocktails with premium Asian dining, this unique venue flaunts stunning interiors complete with huge chandeliers and cool neon lighting. And from bottomless brunches to Sunday roasts or their a la carte offering, they're passionate about creating great food.

The menu is absolutely huge, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free versions all available. The robata grill section features the likes of teriyaki chicken and chilli beef, with a vast selection of sushi platters up for grabs too, while large plates include fillet steak and yellow vegetable curry. Don't forget to pair this with a cocktail - we recommend the vodka and cranberry-based Kiss of the Dragon.
